Joshua 15:19
Who answered, Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water. And he gave her the upper springs, and the nether springs.
Joshua 15:19 (KJV)
Context
Joshua records the division of the Promised Land among the tribes of Israel. The tribe of Judah receives its allotment, and Caleb is highlighted for his steadfast trust. Caleb and Joshua were the only two spies who, forty years earlier, believed the land could be possessed (Numbers 13-14). Because of that faith, Caleb was granted a special inheritance, first requesting the hill country of Hebron in Joshua 14.
Meaning
In this verse, Caleb’s daughter Achsah approaches her father and asks, “Give me a blessing; for thou hast given me a south land; give me also springs of water.” The south land, the Negev, is an arid region where water is essential for life and agriculture. The word “blessing” here means a gift or additional inheritance, not just a spoken wish. Achsah wisely recognizes that land without water cannot be productive. Caleb honors her request and grants both the upper springs and the nether springs, providing for the higher and lower parts of her land.
Biblical connections
This event is also recorded in Judges 1:15, confirming its historical importance. The account follows Othniel, who captured Kirjath-sepher and received Achsah as his wife (Joshua 15:16-17). Achsah’s bold request shows that God’s people may ask for what they need to enjoy the inheritance God provides.
Application
This brief exchange teaches several principles. First, it shows the importance of specific, heartfelt petitions. Achsah boldly asks for what she needs, trusting that God, through her father’s authority, will provide. Second, it demonstrates God’s generosity. The provision of springs in addition to the land shows that God’s blessings often exceed basic necessities, offering abundance for those who walk in faith. Third, the story reinforces the value of unwavering trust. Caleb’s earlier confidence in God’s promise enabled his family to receive not only territory but also the means to sustain it.
Reflection
Believers today can bring their concrete needs before God, trusting that He is attentive to detail. Faithful obedience can lead to blessings that go beyond what is initially visible. Achsah’s request and Caleb’s response invite us to rely on God’s provision, to ask boldly, and to rejoice in the abundant ways He supplies His people.
