Joshua 21:2
And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The Lord commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
Joshua 21:2 (KJV)
Context
The book of Joshua records the events after Israel crossed the Jordan River and entered the Promised Land. In this verse, the people are at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, speaking to the priests and leaders about a command the Lord gave through Moses. Shiloh was a significant place, for the tabernacle was set up there after the conquest, making it the central place of worship and a sacred gathering point for the nation.
Meaning
The request in this verse is grounded in a specific divine command. The Lord had told Moses that the Levites, who were set apart for priestly service and received no territorial inheritance like the other tribes, were to be given cities to dwell in, along with suburbs for their cattle. The suburbs were pasturelands around the cities, set apart not for building houses or planting vineyards, but for the beauty of the city and for room to keep their livestock and the increase of their fields. The Levites’ appeal is not a demand but a respectful request based on what God had already instructed, showing that they honored His word and trusted the leaders to carry it out.
Shiloh: This was the place where the tabernacle was fixed, serving as the religious and administrative center for Israel during this period.
Obedience to God’s Command: The people recognized that the command to give cities and suburbs came directly from God through Moses, demonstrating the importance of obeying His instructions and acknowledging His authority.
Provision for Livestock: The mention of suburbs for cattle reveals God’s concern for the practical needs of His people, including their livestock, and His faithfulness in providing for those dedicated to His service.
Biblical connections
This verse connects directly to the earlier command in Numbers 35:1-8, where the Lord instructed Moses to designate cities for the Levites. It also reflects the orderly distribution of the land among the tribes, ensuring that those who served at the altar were cared for within the inheritance structure of Israel.
Application
As believers today, we can learn from this verse about trusting in God’s promises and obeying His commands. Just as God provided for the Levites, He provides for our needs and gives us guidance for our lives. We should seek to live in obedience to Him, trust in His faithfulness, and honor His instructions in all we do.
Reflection
Consider how God has provided for you, both spiritually and practically. The Levites depended on the faithfulness of their leaders to fulfill God’s command. In the same way, we can bring our needs before God and His people, confident that He who promised is faithful.
