Numbers 35:3
And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and the suburbs of them shall be for their cattle, and for their goods, and for all their beasts.
Numbers 35:3 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of God’s instructions to Moses about giving cities to the Levites. The Levites served at the tabernacle and taught the Law, but they received no large tribal territory like the other tribes. Instead, they were scattered among the tribes, and these cities became their homes. This arrangement was deliberate, so the Levites could live among the people and minister to them throughout the land.
Meaning
The word “suburbs” means open pasturelands around each city. These lands were for the Levites’ cattle, goods, and beasts. So God provided both a place to live and the means to keep their animals and possessions. This was a practical, generous arrangement, not just a small gift. The provision shows that God cared about the daily needs of those who served Him.
Biblical connections
In Numbers 35:1-5, God gives exact measurements for these suburbs: a thousand cubits from the city wall, then two thousand cubits on each side. This detail shows that God cared about the Levites’ daily needs. The Levites depended on the tithes and offerings of the people, and these cities were part of that support. The precise dimensions also reflect the order and intentionality in God’s design for His people.
Application
God’s care for the Levites teaches us to support those who serve Him. When we give to church workers, missionaries, or others in ministry, we help them focus on their spiritual duties without worrying about food or shelter. The community of Israel shared in this responsibility, and we can do the same today. Our giving is a practical way to honor God and care for His servants.
Reflection
This verse also reminds us that God sees our practical needs. He did not only call the Levites to serve; He made sure they had homes and pastureland. We can trust that when we devote ourselves to His work, He will provide for us as well. His provision is intentional and complete, covering both our spiritual and material needs.
