Joshua 21:3
And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the Lord, these cities and their suburbs.
Joshua 21:3 (KJV)
Context
Joshua 21 records the distribution of cities to the Levites, the tribe set apart for service to God. Unlike the other tribes, the Levites received no single territory. Instead, God commanded through Moses that they be given cities and surrounding pasturelands for their livestock, as stated in Numbers 35:1-8. This verse shows the people of Israel obeying that command by giving these cities out of their own inheritance. The giving was part of the larger division of the land of Canaan among the tribes.
Meaning
The verse emphasizes willing obedience. The children of Israel gave the cities “at the commandment of the Lord,” without resistance. Their action fulfilled God’s promise to provide for the Levites, who served in the tabernacle and later the temple. The giving also ensured that the Levites were spread throughout the land, so they could teach and minister to all the people. The chapter later notes that the allocation was done by lot (Joshua 21:8), showing divine direction in the process.
Biblical connections
This arrangement turned an old curse into a blessing. Jacob had said that Levi would be scattered in Israel (Genesis 49:7). Now that scattering became a means of spiritual instruction for every tribe. Also, the Levites’ lack of a land inheritance pointed to a deeper truth: the Lord Himself was their inheritance, as declared in Numbers 18:20. Their portion was not land but God. This provision also fulfilled the earlier instruction that the Levites were to receive forty-eight cities in total.
Application
God’s provision often comes through the willing cooperation of His people. The Israelites gave from what they had received, and the Levites were sustained. Believers today can support those dedicated to spiritual service, trusting that God works through such giving. Obedience to God’s word brings order and blessing to the community of faith. This passage encourages believers to trust God’s provision and to honor those who serve Him.
Reflection
This verse invites readers to consider their own response to God’s commands. Giving is not merely a duty but a way of honoring God and His servants. It also encourages trust in God’s care, knowing that He who commanded the provision will surely fulfill it.
