Anathoth with her suburbs, and Almon with her suburbs, foure cities. Joshua 21:18 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records the fulfillment of God’s promise to give the Israelites the land of Canaan as their inheritance. After conquering various territories, the land was divided among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joshua 21 describes the allocation of cities to the Levites, who were set apart for the service of God and did not receive a specific territory like the other tribes.

The Levitical Cities: Joshua 21 lists the cities that were designated as dwelling places for the Levites. These cities were scattered throughout the territories of the other tribes and provided the Levites with places to live and carry out their priestly duties. The Levites were responsible for the religious rituals, teaching the law, and offering or assisting in sacrifices on behalf of the people.

Anathoth and Almon: Joshua 21:18 mentions cities allocated to the Levites from the tribe of Benjamin, including Anathoth and Almon, along with their surrounding suburbs. Anathoth, which became the hometown of the prophet Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:1) and is noted in 1 Chronicles 6:60, is specifically named. Almon is less known, but it is believed to be located in the territory of Benjamin as well. The verse specifies four cities total, though only two are explicitly named in this passage.

Significance of the Verse: This verse highlights the fulfillment of God’s promise to provide cities for the Levites. It demonstrates God’s faithfulness in ensuring that the Levites had a place to dwell among the other tribes, even though they did not receive a specific tribal inheritance of their own.

Application: As we reflect on this verse, several lessons emerge. First, God is faithful to His promises; He fulfilled His covenant to give the land of Canaan and also provided for the Levites according to His word, encouraging us to trust in His faithfulness in our own lives. Second, the passage reminds us of the importance of serving God and His people. The Levites were dedicated to God’s service, and believers today are likewise called to use their gifts and talents for God’s glory and the benefit of others. Third, the verse teaches the significance of community and interdependence. The Levites lived among the other tribes, illustrating the need for unity, collaboration, and mutual support within the body of Christ. We are called to live in harmony with fellow believers, encouraging one another as we journey together in faith.

In conclusion, Joshua 21:18 showcases God’s faithfulness in providing cities for the Levites and underscores the enduring principles of trusting God’s promises, serving others, and fostering a united, supportive community among believers.
