Joshua 21:17

Listen to this article

And out of the tribe of Beniamin, Gibeon with her suburbs, Geba with her suburbs, Joshua 21:17 (KJV)

Historical Context: Joshua 21 describes the allocation of cities and territories to the Levites among the various tribes of Israel. The Levites were appointed by God to carry out religious duties for the people. Unlike the other tribes, they were not given a specific tribal inheritance but were provided with cities scattered throughout the land so that they could live among the people they served. This verse specifically records the cities assigned to the Levites from the tribe of Benjamin.

Gibeon and Geba: Gibeon and Geba were the two cities given to the Levites from Benjamin. Gibeon is remembered for the famous incident in which the Gibeonites deceived Joshua and the Israelites into a peace treaty (Joshua 9). Geba is mentioned elsewhere in Scripture, such as in 1 Samuel 13:3 and 2 Samuel 5:20, as a location associated with the tribe of Benjamin.

God’s Provision: The allocation of these cities demonstrates God’s provision for those serving in religious roles. He ensured that the Levites had places to live and sustenance from the surrounding people. This reminds believers that God cares for His servants and supplies their needs, both physical and spiritual.

Integrity and Deception: The reference to Gibeon brings to mind the earlier deception by the Gibeonites. It highlights the importance of integrity and honesty in all our dealings. Believers are urged to seek God’s guidance and discernment before entering agreements, guarding against deceitful practices.

Tribe of Benjamin and Unity: Assigning Levite cities from the tribe of Benjamin underscores the need for unity and cooperation among the different tribes and groups within God’s people. Despite varied roles and responsibilities, the tribes worked together to fulfill God’s purposes, a principle that applies to the body of Christ today.

Application:

  • Recognise God’s Provision – Reflect on how God has provided for you—physically, emotionally, spiritually—and give thanks for His faithfulness.
  • Practice Integrity – Live honestly in all interactions, seeking divine wisdom in decision‑making and avoiding deceit.
  • Foster Unity – Embrace cooperation within the community of believers, valuing the diverse gifts each person brings and working together to build up the church.

Studying this verse benefits from deeper exploration of its historical background and related passages. Consulting trusted commentaries and seeking guidance from spiritual leaders can further enrich understanding.
