Joshua 21:16

And Ain with her suburbs, and Juttah with her suburbs, and Beth–shemesh with her suburbs; nine cities out of those two tribes.

Joshua 21:16 (KJV)

The book of Joshua records how the Israelites entered the Promised Land under Joshua’s leadership. After they settled, the Lord commanded that the land be divided among the twelve tribes. The Levites, the priestly tribe, received no large territory of their own. Instead, they were given specific cities with surrounding pasturelands for their flocks. Joshua 21 lists these forty-eight Levitical cities, distributed among the other tribes. Verse 16 names three of the nine cities given from the tribes of Judah and Simeon: Ain, Juttah, and Beth-shemesh.

The word “suburbs” refers to open pastureland around each city, providing grazing for the Levites’ livestock. This practical provision allowed the Levites to dwell among the people and carry out their duties. Ain was a city in Simeon’s territory, also listed in Joshua 19:7 and 1 Chronicles 4:32. Juttah lay in Judah’s hill country, mentioned in Joshua 15:55. Beth-shemesh, on Judah’s northern border, later became known as the place where the Philistines returned the ark of the covenant, as recorded in 1 Samuel 6. These cities were not isolated; they placed the Levites throughout the land.

The Levites’ inheritance was the Lord Himself, as stated in Joshua 13:33. Their cities were a tangible sign of this truth. The number nine often symbolizes completeness or finality in Scripture. Here, nine cities from two tribes show the complete fulfilment of God’s promise to provide for the Levites. The distribution also fulfilled the earlier command in Numbers 35:2-3 to give the Levites cities with suburbs. This careful arrangement integrated the priestly tribe into the daily life of every region.

God’s provision for the Levites teaches that those who serve Him are never forgotten. The people gave from their own inheritance, supporting spiritual work through material gifts. Believers today can follow this pattern by honouring those who teach and minister, ensuring their practical needs are met. The cities also remind us that worship was not confined to one place; it was woven into the whole land. Serving God happens wherever His people live.

This verse shows God’s attention to detail. He did not merely promise to care for the Levites; He named specific cities and suburbs. His faithfulness is precise and personal. When we see how God arranged the land for His servants, we can trust that He also arranges what we need to serve Him faithfully today.
