Ruth 3:17

Listen to this article

“And she said, These six measures of barley gave he me; for he said to me, Go not empty unto thy mother in law.”

In this verse, we find Ruth, a Moabite woman who has been widowed, returning to her mother-in-law, Naomi, after an eventful night at the threshing floor. Let’s explore the context and significance of this verse within the broader story of Ruth.

Context:The book of Ruth is a beautiful narrative that takes place during the time of the judges in Israel. It tells the story of a foreign woman named Ruth who, after the death of her husband, chooses to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, rather than returning to her own people. Ruth’s loyalty and devotion to Naomi lead her to embark on a remarkable journey that ultimately brings her into the lineage of King David and Jesus Christ.

Ruth’s encounter at the threshing floor:In Ruth 3, Naomi hatches a plan to secure a future for Ruth. She instructs Ruth to go to Boaz, a close relative of their deceased husbands, and lay at his feet at the threshing floor after he has finished eating and drinking. This was a customary practice that had the potential to lead to a marriage proposal.

Ruth’s report to Naomi:When Ruth returns to Naomi after her encounter with Boaz, she informs her mother-in-law about the events that unfolded. In verse 17, Ruth shares that Boaz had given her six measures of barley. This generous gift symbolises Boaz’s recognition of Ruth’s integrity and his willingness to provide for her and Naomi.

Symbolism and significance:The six measures of barley given by Boaz represent a substantial amount. Barley was an essential staple crop, and this provision from Boaz showed his kindness and commitment to caring for Ruth and Naomi. By giving her the barley, Boaz not only provides tangible support but also signifies his intention to fulfil the role of a kinsman-redeemer.

God’s providence and faithfulness:The story of Ruth is a remarkable testament to God’s faithfulness and providence. Through the events that unfold in the book, we see how God orchestrates circumstances and uses the faithfulness of Ruth and Boaz to bring about His purposes. The provision of the barley serves as a tangible expression of God’s care and provision for Ruth and Naomi.

Application:Ruth’s story teaches us valuable lessons about loyalty, faithfulness, and trust in God’s providence. Like Ruth, we can trust that God sees our circumstances and is at work in our lives, even when things seem uncertain. We can also learn from Boaz’s example of generosity and kindness, extending care and support to those in need.

In conclusion, Ruth 3:17 captures a pivotal moment in the narrative of Ruth and highlights the provision and care extended to Ruth by Boaz. It serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness and the importance of trusting in His plan, even in challenging circumstances.
