“And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day. And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.”
1 Samuel 10:9:recounts an important event in the life of Saul, who was anointed by Samuel to be the first king of Israel. In this verse, we witness the moment when God bestowed Saul with a new heart and various signs that confirmed his divine appointment.
Transformation of Heart:The verse states that “God gave him another heart.” This phrase signifies a profound change that took place within Saul. It implies a transformation of his inner being, including his thoughts, desires, and motivations. This change was initiated by God and was essential for Saul to fulfill his role as king.
Fulfillment of Signs:The verse also highlights that “all those signs came to pass that day.” Prior to this event, Samuel had given Saul a series of signs as a confirmation of his anointing. These signs included encounters with various people, such as two men near Rachel’s tomb, three men going up to God in Bethel, and a group of prophets coming down from the high place. The fulfilment of these signs demonstrated God’s faithfulness and served as a tangible assurance to Saul that God’s hand was upon him.
Prophetic Empowerment:As Saul came to the hill, he encountered a company of prophets, and “the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.” This highlights the divine empowerment bestowed upon Saul by the Holy Spirit. The Spirit enabled him to prophesy, which suggests that Saul was given a temporary ability to speak forth the words and will of God. This manifestation of the Spirit’s presence affirmed Saul’s calling and prepared him for his future responsibilities as king.
