Then the princes of the Philistines went forth: and it came to pass, after they went forth, that David behaved himself more wisely than all the servants of Saul; so that his name was much set by.

Context

1 Samuel records Israel’s shift from judges to kings. Saul, the first king, had turned from God. David, a young shepherd, had defeated Goliath and entered Saul’s service. This verse closes a chapter showing David’s rise and Saul’s jealousy. The Philistines were constant enemies, and their princes led repeated attacks. Each time they fought, David proved more capable than all of Saul’s servants.

Meaning

The Hebrew word translated “behaved himself wisely” means acting with skill, prudence, and success. David did not merely think wisely; he acted wisely in battle and daily conduct. His name was “much set by,” meaning his reputation became very valuable and highly honored. This was public, known among Israelites and Philistines. The verse does not explain the source of this wisdom, but the surrounding chapters show the LORD was with David (1 Samuel 18:14, 28).

David’s name was “much set by” because God was with him. Our reputation is shaped by our relationship with God. We need not seek fame, but we should seek faithfulness. When we act wisely and humbly, God can use us to bless others and bring glory to His name. Ask yourself: do we seek wisdom from God? Do we value a good name more than riches? Are we faithful in hard circumstances? David’s example encourages us to trust God and live wisely, knowing He sees our efforts and honors those who honor Him.
