1 Samuel 20:23

And as touching the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the Lord be between thee and me for ever.

1 Samuel 20:23 (KJV)

This verse captures a private moment between Jonathan, son of King Saul, and David, his close friend. David had become a celebrated hero in Israel after defeating Goliath, and Saul grew jealous of David’s popularity, resolving to kill him. Jonathan found himself torn between loyalty to his father and loyalty to his friend. In this passage, Jonathan and David are discussing the dangerous situation and have arranged a plan to test Saul’s intentions. One element involved a signal in the field: Jonathan would shoot arrows and give a word indicating whether David should flee. Another involved a test at a feast, where David’s absence would be noted to gauge Saul’s hostility.

Jonathan says, “Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed forever.” This oath underscores the depth of their friendship and the trust they placed in each other. By invoking the LORD, they acknowledge that their bond is not merely human affection but is under divine protection and guidance. The phrase “forever” points to the everlasting nature of their covenant and their hope that God would preserve their relationship throughout their lives, even amid present trials. The Targum renders the phrase as “the Word of the Lord be between me and thee a witness for ever,” emphasizing that God Himself is the witness to their agreement and the one who would avenge its breaking.

The covenant language here echoes the solemn promises made before God throughout Scripture, where the LORD is invoked as a witness to agreements between parties. This verse also connects to the broader account of David and Jonathan, whose friendship was marked by mutual loyalty and shared faith, as seen in 1 Samuel 18:3.

The passage highlights the value of godly friendships and alliances. Jonathan and David’s relationship was built on trust, loyalty, and shared faith. Their reliance on God as a witness and guarantor of their commitment offers a model for believers to cultivate meaningful relationships with those who share their values and trust in the Lord’s enduring presence. It also reminds us of the seriousness of making promises before God, who is the ultimate witness and judge.

Consider the relationships in your life that are grounded in mutual faith and commitment. How can you invite God to be the witness and protector of those bonds, especially when circumstances are uncertain? Let this verse encourage you to honor your commitments and trust in God’s faithfulness to sustain the relationships He has given you.
