Listen to this article

“And Joab answered and said, Far be it, far be it from me, that I should swallow up or destroy.”

Historical Context:2 Samuel 20:20 is part of a narrative that takes place after the death of Absalom, King David’s rebellious son. Sheba, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, instigated a rebellion against David’s reign. This verse occurs during the pursuit of Sheba by David’s army, led by Joab, the commander of the army.

Joab’s Response:In this verse, Joab responds to a wise woman from the city of Abel who has negotiated with him regarding Sheba’s presence in her city. Joab had threatened to destroy the city if Sheba was not handed over to him. However, the woman skillfully persuades Joab to reconsider, emphasizing the city’s peaceful nature and its significance in Israel.
