2 Samuel 20:23

Now Joab was over all the host of Israel: and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and over the Pelethites:

2 Samuel 20:23 (KJV)

This verse appears at the end of 2 Samuel 20, after the rebellion of Sheba, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, against King David. Joab, the commander of David’s army, pursued Sheba to Abel Beth Maachah. A wise woman in that city persuaded the people to hand Sheba over, and the rebellion ended. This verse then lists the key military leaders in David’s kingdom, showing the order restored after the crisis.

Joab was over all the host of Israel, meaning he commanded the entire army. He was David’s nephew, the son of Zeruiah, and had served as commander throughout David’s reign. His position here shows he remained in authority, either because he was never removed or because David reinstated him after the death of Amasa. Benaiah, the son of Jehoiada, was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites. These were elite troops, often identified as foreign mercenaries, who served as the king’s personal bodyguard. Benaiah’s role was one of high trust and honor.

Joab was a complex figure. He killed Abner and Absalom, actions that were controversial and not ordered by David. Yet God used him to secure the kingdom. Benaiah, in contrast, was known for loyalty and valor. He later remained faithful to Solomon and became commander of the army in his reign (1 Kings 2:35). This contrast shows that God works through imperfect people to accomplish His purposes. The administrative list also highlights the structure of David’s kingdom, showing how God used flawed leaders to fulfill His plan.

This verse teaches that God establishes order and structure in His kingdom. Even after rebellion, David’s administration was organized with clear roles. We can trust that God is sovereign over leaders and nations, working through flawed individuals to fulfill His plan. In our own lives, we are called to serve faithfully in whatever position God places us, whether prominent or behind the scenes.

  • Faithful service matters: Benaiah’s loyalty was rewarded, and Joab’s role continued despite his flaws.

  • God’s sovereignty prevails: The rebellion ended, and the kingdom was restored, showing that no human plan can thwart God’s purposes.

Consider the leaders God has placed over you. Pray for them, and also examine your own heart. Are you serving with loyalty and integrity, even when no one is watching? Remember that God sees your faithful service and can use you, just as He used Benaiah, to bring stability and blessing to His people.
