2 Samuel 20:25

And Sheva was scribe: and Zadok and Abiathar were the priests:

2 Samuel 20:25 (KJV)

This verse appears near the end of 2 Samuel 20, after Sheba, a Benjaminite, led a rebellion against King David. Joab pursued Sheba, and the revolt ended. The list of officials shows David’s government restored after turmoil. The mention of these roles signals that normal life had returned after a time of conflict.

Sheva served as scribe, a royal secretary who kept records and managed written communication. Zadok and Abiathar were priests, continuing their service from earlier in David’s reign (2 Samuel 8:17). Their presence shows the orderly functioning of both civil and religious offices. The scribe’s work was vital for communication and law, while the priests were essential for sacrifices and teaching. This verse does not explain their duties but simply records their positions, emphasizing the importance of established roles among God’s people.

Zadok later anointed Solomon as king, while Abiathar supported Adonijah. Their shared priestly role here highlights the continuity of worship and leadership. The listing of both priests together may indicate a shared ministry, though the text does not specify their exact duties. This continuity points to God’s providence in maintaining faithful servants across generations.

God values faithful service in ordinary roles. A scribe’s work and priestly duties both mattered for the nation’s stability. Believers today can serve God through administration, teaching, or other tasks, knowing that order and record-keeping support the community. God works through ordinary administrative structures, and every role contributes to the health of His people.

This brief list reminds us that God works through established structures. After conflict, the restoration of normal offices was a sign of peace. We can thank God for those who serve quietly and faithfully, and we can commit ourselves to dependable service in our own callings. Even a simple record of names shows that God values order, faithful service, and the continuity of worship.
