2 Samuel 22:23

For all his judgments were before me: and as for his statutes, I did not depart from them.

2 Samuel 22:23 (KJV)

David sings this song after God delivers him from Saul and other enemies. He speaks of his own faithful walk, not to boast, but to praise God who rewards righteousness. This verse is part of a longer song of thanksgiving, and it shows the kind of life that pleases God.

“For all his judgments were before me” means David kept God’s righteous decisions in mind. He knew what God called right and wrong, and he used that knowledge to guide his steps. “And as for his statutes, I did not depart from them” means David did not turn away from God’s laws. He obeyed them consistently, not perfectly, but with wholehearted devotion. His awareness of God’s judgments was not occasional; it was a continual reflection for guidance and instruction.

The same testimony appears in Psalm 18:22, confirming that David’s words were not a sudden claim but a settled pattern. His obedience was not the basis of his salvation; it was the fruit of a heart devoted to God. True righteousness is found in Christ, who perfectly fulfilled the law, and believers receive His righteousness by faith. David’s declaration is not a claim of sinless perfection but a testimony of deliberate commitment to God’s commands.

Like David, we should keep God’s judgments before us. This happens when we study and meditate on Scripture, letting it shape our decisions. We are also called to obey God’s statutes, not merely to hear them. This means choosing to follow His commands even when it is difficult, trusting that His ways are for our good. Regularly meditating on Scripture and consciously choosing to obey it, even when challenging, marks a life pleasing to God.

David’s words challenge us to examine our own walk. Do we know God’s judgments well enough to keep them before us? Do we depart from His statutes when they are inconvenient? A life that pleases God is marked by a deliberate, ongoing commitment to His Word. Such a life leads to blessing and deeper trust in God’s wisdom.
