1 Kings 10:21
And all king Solomons drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forrest of Lebanon were of pure gold, none were of siluer, it was nothing accounted of in the dayes of Solomon. 1 Kings 10:21 (KJV)
The verse belongs to a passage that describes the extraordinary wealth and splendor of King Solomon’s reign. It follows the account of the queen of Sheba’s visit, during which she was amazed by Solomon’s wisdom, his royal court, and the grandeur of his possessions, and she praised the God of Israel for granting such prosperity.
The reference to gold underscores the opulence of Solomon’s kingdom. In biblical culture gold was the metal most associated with royalty, wealth, and divine favor. That every drinking vessel was made of gold signals the abundance and richness that characterized his rule.
The “house of the forest of Lebanon” was a magnificent building in Jerusalem, named for the cedar timber imported from Lebanon that formed its columns and beams. It served as a royal armory and treasury, and the fact that its vessels were also of pure gold further emphasizes the extravagance of Solomon’s palace complex.
The statement that none of the vessels were of silver, “it was nothing accounted of,” highlights how gold was so plentiful that silver was considered insignificant in this context, even though silver retained value for other purposes elsewhere in the biblical world.
Application begins with the reminder that Solomon’s material blessings were ultimately gifts from God. Wealth, when viewed as a divine provision, can be used to bless others and to bring glory to the Creator rather than becoming an end in itself.
At the same time, the passage warns against excessive materialism. The love of money and luxury can distract believers from a deeper relationship with God and impede spiritual growth. Prioritizing eternal values—love, kindness, generosity—keeps the heart focused on what truly matters.
Finally, the verse calls believers to gratitude and faithful stewardship. Recognizing God’s provision should lead to wise management of resources, generosity toward the poor, and support for God’s work, thereby honoring Him and promoting justice.
In conclusion, 1 Kings 10:21 portrays the immense wealth and splendor of Solomon’s reign while also reminding us that material blessings are to be used responsibly, with gratitude, and for the glory of God.
