1 Kings 10:21
And all king Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon.
1 Kings 10:21 (KJV)
Context
This verse appears in the account of King Solomon’s reign, right after the queen of Sheba visited Jerusalem. She saw his wisdom, his court, and the splendor of his kingdom, and she praised the God of Israel for giving such prosperity to His people. The verse describes the wealth that marked Solomon’s rule.
Meaning
Gold was the metal most closely linked with royalty and divine favor in the ancient world. That every drinking vessel was made of gold shows how abundant and rich Solomon’s kingdom was. The “house of the forest of Lebanon” was a grand building in Jerusalem, named for the cedar timber brought from Lebanon. It served as a royal armory and treasury, and its vessels were also pure gold. The statement that silver “was nothing accounted of” means silver had become so common that people did not value it, even though it still had worth elsewhere. This abundance was not accidental; it was a sign of God’s blessing on Solomon’s reign.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 9:20 confirms this same description of Solomon’s wealth. This prosperity was a fulfillment of God’s promise to Solomon, showing that God kept His word and blessed the king with abundance. Yet the same wealth later became a warning, because Solomon’s heart turned from God despite all he had received. The splendor of his kingdom, though impressive, could not secure his faithfulness.
Application
Solomon’s material blessings were gifts from God. Wealth, when seen as divine provision, can be used to bless others and bring glory to the Creator rather than becoming an end in itself. At the same time, this passage warns against excessive materialism. The love of money and luxury can distract believers from a deeper relationship with God and hinder spiritual growth. Prioritizing eternal values—love, kindness, generosity—keeps the heart focused on what truly matters. Believers today can learn to hold wealth loosely, using it for God’s purposes while trusting Him for daily needs.
Reflection
This verse calls believers to gratitude and faithful stewardship. Recognizing God’s provision should lead to wise management of resources, generosity toward the poor, and support for God’s work. Such actions honor Him and promote justice. The splendor of Solomon’s reign fades, but the call to use every blessing for God’s glory remains. May we remember that true riches are found in a heart devoted to God, not in the abundance of possessions.
