2 Kings 6:16

Listen to this article

“And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them.”

This verse is part of a narrative that takes place during the time of the prophet Elisha. At this point, the king of Syria had been warring against Israel, but Elisha, through the guidance of the Lord, was able to reveal the Syrian king’s battle plans to the king of Israel. The Syrian king, troubled by this, sent his army to capture Elisha.

Let’s explore the key themes and lessons we can learn from this verse:

The assurance of God’s presence:In this verse, Elisha encourages his servant not to be afraid. Despite being surrounded by a powerful enemy, Elisha understands that the army of God is on their side. This verse reminds us that God’s presence and power are always with His people, even in the midst of difficult circumstances. It assures us that we are not alone in our battles and that we can find strength and courage in the Lord.

Seeing through spiritual eyes:Elisha’s servant was initially filled with fear and despair when he saw the vast Syrian army surrounding them. However, Elisha saw the situation from a different perspective. Through spiritual eyes, he recognised the greater reality that God’s angelic forces were present and outnumbered the enemy. This verse challenges us to view our circumstances from a spiritual perspective rather than being solely focused on the visible and immediate challenges we face. When we align our perspective with God’s truth, we can have hope and confidence in His provision and protection.

Trusting in God’s power:Elisha’s response reflects his unwavering faith in God’s power. He reassures his servant that those who are with them are greater in number than those against them. This verse reminds us that when we trust in God and His promises, we can have confidence in His ability to overcome any obstacle or opposition we may encounter. It encourages us to rely on God’s strength rather than relying on our own limited understanding or resources.

Overcoming fear:Fear is a common human emotion, and it can paralyse us, hindering our progress and faith. Elisha’s words serve as an antidote to fear. By reminding his servant of God’s presence and power, Elisha encourages him to overcome fear and replace it with trust and confidence. This verse teaches us that when we focus on God’s faithfulness and His ability to deliver us, we can conquer fear and walk in faith.

Overall, 2 Kings 6:16 highlights the importance of having a perspective grounded in faith, trust, and the awareness of God’s presence and power. It encourages us to overcome fear and find strength in knowing that God is with us, fighting our battles.
