1 Chronicles 1:36

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

The sonnes of Eliphaz: Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek. 1 Chronicles 1:36 (KJV)

This verse is part of the genealogy recorded in 1 Chronicles 1, which lists the descendants of Adam and the genealogies of various nations and peoples. In this particular verse the focus is on the descendants of Esau, the eldest son of Isaac and brother of Jacob.

Eliphaz was the eldest son of Esau and Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite (Genesis 36:4). He became the father of several sons, all of whom are mentioned in this verse.

Teman, the firstborn son of Eliphaz, is named after the region of Teman, associated with Edom. The name can be translated as “south” or “southland,” possibly referring to the southern region of Edom.

Omar is listed among the sons of Eliphaz, though the Scriptures provide little additional information about him.

Zephi is also named as a son of Eliphaz, but, like Omar, he receives only a brief mention in the biblical record.

Gatam appears in the list of Eliphaz’s sons, yet no further details about him are supplied in Scripture.

Kenaz is identified as a son of Eliphaz and, according to Genesis 36:11, as a grandson of Esau who was called a duke of Edom, indicating a position of prominence within the tribe.

Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz and the mother of Amalek (Genesis 36:12). Her inclusion highlights the mixed lineage that would give rise to the Amalekites.

Amalek, the son of Eliphaz and Timna, later gave his name to the Amalekites, a people who became persistent enemies of Israel throughout its history.

Overall, this verse offers a concise glimpse into the genealogy and lineage of Esau, concentrating on the descendants of his eldest son, Eliphaz. Though many of these names receive only brief mentions, they contribute to the broader narrative of the historical and ancestral connections among the nations and peoples recorded in the Old Testament.
