1 Chronicles 4:40
And they found fat pasture and good, and the land was wide, and quiet, and peaceable; for they of Ham had dwelt there of old.
1 Chronicles 4:40 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits inside a genealogical section of 1 Chronicles, yet it records a real event. Certain families of the tribe of Simeon went to the entrance of Gedor, toward the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks. They found what they needed.
Meaning
The land they found was “fat pasture and good,” meaning rich and fertile grazing. It was also “wide, and quiet, and peaceable,” so there was room for their animals and no enemy to disturb them. The reason for this peace is stated plainly: “they of Ham had dwelt there of old.” These were likely Canaanites, descendants of Ham through Canaan, who had lived there long before but were not a threat at that time.
Biblical connections
This quiet land recalls the rest God promised Israel after their wanderings. In Deuteronomy 12:9-10, God spoke of giving His people rest from their enemies and a place to dwell safely. Here, the Simeonites experienced that rest in a practical way, as God provided for their flocks.
Application
God cares for the ordinary needs of His people, including pasture for animals. This account encourages trust in His provision. He can give peace and abundance even in places long occupied by others, because He prepares the way for His own.
Reflection
Notice that the land was peaceful because the former inhabitants had not opposed them. This reminds us that God’s blessings often come through circumstances we do not control. The Simeonites did not fight for this land; they simply found it ready. Their response was to settle and enjoy what God had given. We can learn to receive God’s gifts with gratitude, recognizing that He is faithful to provide for our needs.
