1 Chronicles 4:39

And they went to the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.

1 Chronicles 4:39 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the historical writings in the Old Testament. It is believed to have been written by Ezra the priest after the Israelites’ return from exile in Babylon. The purpose of Chronicles is to provide a comprehensive account of Israel’s history, including genealogies, the reigns of the kings, and the importance of worship.

In the preceding verses (1 Chronicles 4:24-38), the genealogy of certain families is listed. This verse refers to a specific group of people who went to the entrance of Gedor. This group was likely a clan or a family from the tribe of Judah, though some scholars suggest a possible connection to the tribe of Simeon. The location Gedor is mentioned elsewhere in 1 Chronicles 4:18 as a city in Judah, but the Gedor here may be a different, more distant place, possibly associated with the Philistine region.

The verse describes a group of shepherds who went to the entrance of Gedor, on the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks. This reflects the pastoral, agrarian livelihood of ancient Israel, where finding adequate grazing land was essential for survival. Their journey underscores the practical dependence of these families on the land and on God’s provision for their daily needs.

While this verse primarily serves as a record of a historical event, it also carries spiritual lessons. The act of seeking pasture for their flocks implies the importance of sustenance and provision. In a spiritual sense, believers are called to seek the nourishment that comes from God, symbolized by the green pastures mentioned in Psalm 23:2. Just as physical flocks need good pasture for nourishment, our souls require spiritual nourishment from God’s Word and a close relationship with Him.

The verse also highlights the importance of diligent effort and stewardship. The shepherds in this passage took the initiative to seek suitable pasture for their flocks, indicating their responsibility to care for what was entrusted to them. As believers, we are called to be faithful stewards of the resources and responsibilities God has given us, using them wisely and for His glory. This includes trusting God for guidance and provision in our daily pursuits, while actively seeking the resources we need.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 4:39 provides a brief glimpse into the history of a group who went to seek pasture for their flocks. While it primarily serves as a genealogical record, we can draw spiritual lessons from it, such as seeking spiritual nourishment and faithfully stewarding what God has entrusted to us.
