1 Chronicles 4:4

And Penuel the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah, the father of Beth–lehem.

1 Chronicles 4:4 (KJV)

1 Chronicles records Israel’s family lines, tracing them from early ancestors to King David. Chapter 4 focuses on Judah’s descendants, listing names and relationships vital for tribal identity and inheritance.

Hur is called the firstborn of Ephratah, the region around Bethlehem. Earlier, 1 Chronicles 2:50-51 names Shobal, Salma, and Hareph as sons of Hur. These connections link families to towns and show the spread of Hur’s lineage.

Verse 4:4 adds Penuel, father of Gedor, and Ezer, father of Hushah, as sons of Hur. Little else is recorded about them, yet Gedor later appears as a town of Judah (1 Chronicles 4:18), suggesting his descendants settled there. Ezer and Hushah are mentioned only here, implying they were notable within their family.

Some suggest Penuel may be Hareph (1 Chronicles 2:51) and Ezer may be Shuah (1 Chronicles 4:11), but these are uncertain. The text does not confirm them.

Bethlehem connects this genealogy to the messianic line. King David was born there, and later Jesus Christ was born in Bethlehem. God’s plan of redemption runs through specific families and places.

Genealogies were highly valued in ancient Israel because they established legitimate lineage, inheritance rights, and tribal affiliation. By preserving these lines, the chronicler linked past and present, reminding people of their roots and identity as God’s chosen people.

This verse encourages believers to see significance in their own place in God’s plan, even when details are sparse. God works through ordinary individuals, like Penuel and Ezer, to accomplish His purposes. Their names may seem small, but they are part of a larger story that leads to Bethlehem and to Christ.

God’s care extends to every person and family, even those mentioned briefly in Scripture. Our names may not be widely known, but they are written in God’s book, and our lives can contribute to His story.
