1 Chronicles 6:19

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

The sonnes of Merari: Mahli, and Mushi. And these are the families of the Leuites, according to their fathers. 1 Chronicles 6:19 (KJV)

The verse ‘But Jehoiada waxed old, and was full of days when he died; an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died’ is recorded in 2 Chronicles 24:15 (KJV). Jehoiada served as high priest during the reign of King Joash, a fact noted in 2 Kings 12:1‑2 and 2 Chronicles 24:1‑2. The book of 1 Chronicles, which concentrates on the genealogies of the Levites, does not mention Jehoiada and contains no such verse about his age.

The context of 1 Chronicles is primarily genealogical, especially in chapter 6 where the lineage of the priestly tribe of Levi is traced from Levi through the generations to the time of David. This background helps explain why a priest such as Jehoiada, who operated later in the narrative, is absent from that record.

Understanding Jehoiada’s ministry reveals a priest who played a crucial role in preserving the worship of Yahweh during a period of political turmoil. His decisive actions in protecting the young King Joash and restoring proper worship demonstrate a deep dedication to God’s covenant and to the spiritual health of the nation.

From Jehoiada’s story we draw several timeless lessons. First, a life of purpose is measured not merely by its length but by faithfulness and impact; Jehoiada’s commitment to God and to Israel shows that true fulfillment comes from serving others and honoring God. Second, God’s faithfulness is evident in the preservation of true worship through Jehoiada’s leadership, reflecting the divine promise to protect those who remain loyal. Third, faithfulness in service is exemplified by Jehoiada’s diligent priestly duties, urging believers to carry out their responsibilities with integrity, whether in great or modest roles.

Application of these principles is straightforward. Believers are encouraged to examine how their actions align with God’s will and to pursue a life that makes a positive difference in the lives of others. Trust in God’s steadfast love and guidance, especially amid challenges, is essential. Finally, whatever responsibilities one holds—big or small—should be performed with dedication, recognizing that all service ultimately honors the Lord.
