1 Chronicles 6:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

Ioah his sonne, Iddo his sonne, Zerah his sonne, Ieaterai his sonne, 1 Chronicles 6:21 (KJV)

To gain a deeper understanding of this verse, it is helpful to explore its context within the larger passage and the significance of the locations mentioned. 1 Chronicles 6 is primarily concerned with documenting the genealogy of the Levites, who were chosen by God to serve in the tabernacle and later in the temple. The passage lists the descendants of Levi, who were appointed to various duties related to the worship and service of God.

1 Chronicles 6:21 is part of a larger list of Levitical cities given to the sons of Gershon, one of the three main divisions of the Levites. These cities were assigned as dwelling places for the Levites and their families, and the verse specifically mentions two cities, Heshbon and Jazer, along with their surrounding suburbs or pasturelands. “Heshbon with her suburbs, and Jazer with her suburbs.”

Heshbon was an important city situated east of the Jordan River in the territory of the tribe of Gad. In the Old Testament it was initially occupied by the Amorites but later captured by the Israelites during their conquest of Canaan (Numbers 21:26‑30). After its capture Heshbon became part of the allotted territory of Gad (Joshua 13:17) and is referenced elsewhere in Scripture in historical and poetic contexts.

Jazer was also an Amorite city located near Heshbon. Like Heshbon, Jazer was captured by the Israelites and subsequently given to the tribe of Gad (Numbers 21:32; Joshua 13:25). The city held strategic importance as a border city and is mentioned in relation to tribal inheritances and military campaigns (Joshua 13:25; Isaiah 16:8‑9).

The inclusion of these cities and their suburbs in the list of Levitical cities underscores the responsibility of the Levites to serve in various regions throughout the land. They were not granted specific territorial inheritances like the other tribes; instead, they were distributed among the cities of the other tribes to aid in worship, teaching, and administrative duties related to the tabernacle and later the temple.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 6:21 provides historical context by highlighting Heshbon and Jazer, together with their suburbs, as assigned dwelling places for the Levites. This serves as a reminder of the distribution of responsibilities and the significance of the Levites in the religious life of Israel.
