1 Chronicles 6:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“The sons of Kohath; Amminadab his son, Korah his son, Assir his son”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is part of the Old Testament and serves as a historical record of the genealogies of the Israelites. This particular verse is part of the genealogy of the Levites, who were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. The sons of Kohath: The verse begins by mentioning the descendants of Kohath, who was the second son of Levi. Kohath’s descendants played a significant role in the service of the tabernacle and later the temple. They were responsible for carrying the sacred objects and instruments used in worship.

Amminadab:Amminadab is listed as the son of Kohath. He is mentioned in other parts of the Bible, including the genealogy of Jesus in the New Testament (Matthew 1:4; Luke 3:33). Amminadab’s name means “my kinsman is noble,” signifying a sense of honor or nobility.

Korah:Korah, the son of Amminadab, is the next individual mentioned. He is a well-known figure in the Old Testament. Korah, along with Dathan and Abiram, led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron during the wilderness wanderings (Numbers 16). This rebellion was ultimately unsuccessful, and Korah and his followers faced severe consequences.

Assir:Assir is listed as the son of Korah. Not much is known about him apart from his inclusion in this genealogy. His name means “prisoner” or “binder,” although the significance of this name in relation to his life is not explicitly mentioned in the biblical text.

Genealogy and significance:This genealogy from 1 Chronicles 6 traces the lineage of the Levites, specifically the branch of Kohath. It serves as a record of the families and individuals who were involved in the service of God’s tabernacle and later the temple. This emphasis on genealogy highlights the importance of family and lineage within the Israelite community.
