1 Chronicles 6:65
And they gave by lot out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, and out of the tribe of the children of Benjamin, these cities, which are called by their names.
1 Chronicles 6:65 (KJV)
Context
This verse closes the list of cities given to the Levites. The tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin provided these cities. The Levites did not receive one large territory like the other tribes. Instead, they lived in cities spread across the land. This arrangement let them serve the people everywhere. The broader setting of 1 Chronicles 6 is the genealogy of the Levites and the establishment of their duties and dwelling places. As the priestly tribe, they were dedicated to the service of the Lord and the temple. Being scattered among the tribes meant they could carry out their religious duties among the people.
Meaning
The cities were given by lot. In ancient Israel, casting lots was a serious way to learn God’s will. The people did not see it as chance. They believed God guided the result. So the distribution of cities was not random. It was God’s choice. This method ensured fairness and impartiality, as the outcome was perceived as God’s decision. The verse says the cities were called by their names. This points back to the full list in earlier verses (1 Chronicles 6:54-64). Each city had a purpose and a place. The summary nature of this verse reminds us that God’s provision is detailed and intentional.
Biblical connections
God had promised that the Levites would have no land of their own, because He was their inheritance (Numbers 18:20). This verse shows that promise being kept. The other tribes shared their land with the Levites. This made the whole nation depend on one another. Worship was not separate from daily life. It was woven into every region. The inclusion of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin highlights the fulfillment of God’s promise to provide for the Levites. Their dependence on the other tribes served as a tangible reminder of the interdependence of the tribes and the centrality of worship in the nation’s life.
Application
We can learn from the Levites’ example. They served God wherever they lived. We do not need to be in a special place to worship. Our homes, workplaces, and communities are places of service. The way the cities were given also teaches us to seek God’s guidance. We may not cast lots, but we can pray, read Scripture, and ask wise believers for counsel. God cares about our decisions and leads us when we trust Him. The method of allocation by lot shows that God is involved in the details of our lives. He is not distant or indifferent. He guides those who seek Him with humble hearts.
Reflection
God provided for the Levites through the generosity of other tribes. He still provides for His people through one another. Think about the people God has placed around you. How can you support those who serve Him? Also, consider your own decisions. Do you bring them before God? He is sovereign over every detail, and He guides those who seek Him. The Levites had no land, but they had God Himself as their portion. We too can find our true security and identity in Him, not in earthly possessions or positions.
