1 Chronicles 8:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“Now Benjamin begat Bela his firstborn, Ashbel the second, and Aharah the third,”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that provides genealogies and records of the Israelites. It traces the lineage of various tribes and families, emphasizing the genealogy of the descendants of Jacob. Chapter 8 focuses on the genealogy of Benjamin, one of the twelve sons of Jacob.

Genealogy of Benjamin:The verse begins by stating that Benjamin, the son of Jacob, had three sons: Bela, Ashbel, and Aharah. This is a concise record of the descendants of Benjamin, highlighting the lineage of his firstborn, Bela.

Importance of Genealogies:In ancient Israel, genealogies played a crucial role in establishing and preserving tribal and family identities. The genealogies served as a reference point for determining tribal inheritance, priesthood eligibility, and tracing one’s lineage back to the ancestors. These records were essential for maintaining the historical and religious identity of the Israelite community.

Benjamin’s Descendants:The genealogy of Benjamin mentioned in 1 Chronicles 8 continues throughout the chapter, providing a list of his descendants. It highlights various individuals who played a significant role in the history of Israel, including Ehud (a judge of Israel), Saul (the first king of Israel), and Mordecai (from the book of Esther).

  • Overall:1 Chronicles 8:1 provides a glimpse into the genealogy of Benjamin, one of the tribes of Israel. It highlights the importance of genealogies in preserving historical and religious identities while reminding us of God’s faithfulness throughout generations.
