1 Chronicles 11:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“So David waxed greater and greater: for the Lord of hosts was with him.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles provides a historical account of the reign of King David over Israel. It emphasizes David’s military exploits, the establishment of Jerusalem as the capital city, and the preparations for building the temple. Chapter 11 focuses on the mighty men who supported David and played a significant role in his reign.

Explanation and Analysis:

“So David waxed greater and greater”:This phrase highlights David’s increasing prominence and power. It signifies his growth in influence and authority as he continued to lead and rule over Israel. David’s rise to greatness was a result of his faithfulness, obedience to God, and his leadership skills.

“For the Lord of hosts was with him”:This statement reveals the key reason for David’s success. The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, was with David throughout his life and reign. God’s presence and favour upon David empowered him to accomplish great things and fulfil his divine calling as the king of Israel.

  • God’s presence and favour lead to success:David’s growing greatness was directly attributed to the Lord’s presence with him. Likewise, when we walk in a close relationship with God, seeking His guidance, and obeying His commands, we position ourselves for success in the purposes God has for us. As believers, we can take comfort in knowing that God is with us, and His presence empowers us to overcome challenges and achieve our potential.
  • Humility and dependence on God:Despite his increasing power and influence, David never forgot that his success was ultimately because of God’s presence and blessing upon him. This teaches us the importance of remaining humble and recognising our dependence on God. When we acknowledge that our abilities and achievements come from Him, we guard ourselves against pride and cultivate a heart that seeks His guidance and glory.
  • Trusting God’s presence in challenging times:David faced numerous trials and battles throughout his reign, but he overcame them because God was with him. In our own lives, we will encounter difficulties and obstacles, but we can have confidence that God is with us, just as He was with David. By placing our trust in Him, we can find strength and courage to navigate through challenging seasons and emerge victorious.
  • Seeking God’s presence above all:The key to David’s greatness was not his own abilities or strategies, but the presence of the Lord. It is a reminder for us to prioritise seeking God’s presence above all else. As we cultivate a personal relationship with Him through prayer, studying His Word, and worship, we open ourselves to experiencing His power and leading in our lives.

In conclusion, 1 Chronicles 11:9 highlights David’s increasing greatness and attributes it to the presence of the Lord of hosts. This verse reminds us of the importance of God’s presence in our lives, the significance of humility and dependence on Him, and the assurance that His presence empowers us to overcome challenges and achieve success in fulfilling His purposes.
