1 Chronicles 12:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Eleuzai, and Ierimoth, and Bealiath, and Shemariah, and Shephatiah the Haruphite, 1 Chronicles 12:5 (KJV)

This verse is part of a passage in 1 Chronicles 12 that describes the valiant warriors who came to David at Ziklag during his time of exile from Saul, the first king of Israel. These warriors pledged their loyalty and support to David, recognizing him as the rightful king chosen by God. To understand the significance of 1 Chronicles 12:5, it is helpful to consider the surrounding verses and the broader context. In the preceding verses (1 Chronicles 12:1‑4), the passage lists other individuals from the tribe of Benjamin who joined David, including mighty men, archers, and individuals skilled in using both the right hand and the left.

1 Chronicles 12:5 mentions several individuals who came to David’s side during his time in Ziklag. These warriors are named: Elam, Ishmaiah, Mahalah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, Uzziah, Joezer, and Jashobeam. Although the passage does not provide extensive details about each person, it emphasizes their dedication and commitment to David. The verse concludes by noting that these warriors were from the Korhite clan. The Korhites were descendants of Kohath, a son of Levi and a grandson of Jacob (Israel). Historically the Kohathites were one of the Levitical clans responsible for the care and transportation of the sacred tabernacle items during the time of Moses and Joshua. However, this particular group of Korhites mentioned in 1 Chronicles 12:5 were not involved in priestly duties but served in military capacity.

The collective effort of these valiant warriors from the tribe of Benjamin and the Korhites demonstrates their loyalty to David. They recognized his anointing and saw him as the chosen king of Israel. Their support was vital for David, especially during his exile when he faced opposition and persecution from Saul. Their allegiance played a significant role in the eventual establishment of his reign as the king of a united Israel. Overall, 1 Chronicles 12:5 highlights the individuals who joined David during his challenging period and symbolizes the loyalty and support given to him. The passage underscores the importance of unity, commitment, and recognizing God’s chosen leader.
