1 Chronicles 13:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?”

Context:This verse is part of a narrative that describes an event in David’s life when he attempted to bring the Ark of the Covenant back to Jerusalem.

To understand the significance of this verse, it’s helpful to provide some context.

In the preceding verses, we learn that David desired to bring the Ark, which symbolized the presence of God among the Israelites, to Jerusalem.

However, instead of following the prescribed method of transportation by using poles and Levites, David placed the Ark on a new cart.

As they journeyed, the oxen pulling the cart stumbled, and Uzza, one of the men accompanying the Ark, reached out his hand to steady it.

At that moment, God’s anger burned against Uzza, and he struck him down for his irreverent action.

This event had a profound impact on David, leading to his fear of God mentioned in 1 Chronicles 13:12.

David’s fear can be understood as a deep reverence and realization of the holiness and power of God.

He recognized that he had mishandled the Ark, failing to follow God’s instructions, and as a result, a man lost his life.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience and reverence in our approach to God.

David’s fear was not a paralyzing terror but a recognition that God’s ways are to be respected and followed.

It is a valuable lesson for all believers to approach God with reverence, honoring His instructions and seeking to align our lives with His will.

In the larger context of the chapter, this event led David to pause his plans of bringing the Ark to Jerusalem.

He left it in the house of Obed‑Edom, a Levite, and the Ark remained there for three months.

During this time, David sought the Lord and learned the proper way to handle the Ark, as prescribed in the Law.

He realized the importance of obedience and the need to approach God with the utmost reverence.
