1 Chronicles 16:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Be ye mindfull alwayes of his Couenant: the worde which hee commanded to a thousand generations: 1 Chronicles 16:15 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles records the genealogies and historic events of Israel, with chapter 16 focusing on the dedication of the ark of the covenant and the celebration of bringing it to Jerusalem. In this setting the psalmist calls the people to remember the covenant that God has established with His people.

The verse underscores the importance of being mindful of God’s covenant—a binding agreement between the Creator and His people. Throughout Scripture God made covenants with Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and David, each confirming His faithfulness and purpose. The reference to “his covenant” therefore points to the overarching covenant relationship God maintains with Israel, as highlighted in 1 Chronicles 16:16‑17, which speaks of the covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Israel as an everlasting covenant.

Remembrance is a central theme. Believers are urged to keep the covenant constantly before them, recalling its terms and living in obedience. This requires a conscious effort to honor God’s commandments and remain faithful to His promises, lest the covenant be forgotten or neglected.

The phrase “a thousand generations” expresses an indefinite, limitless duration. It signifies that God’s covenant is not temporary but intended to endure through countless ages, being handed down from one generation to the next. This enduring nature ensures that God’s faithfulness and instruction are perpetually remembered throughout history.

Application for today includes reflecting on the covenant God has made with us through Jesus Christ. In the New Testament, Christ inaugurated the covenant of grace, calling believers to live according to its principles of love, forgiveness, and faith. The passage also reminds us of the responsibility to teach future generations about God’s faithfulness, His commandments, and His promises, so that His truth continues to be proclaimed and upheld in the world.
