1 Chronicles 17:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.”

Historical Context:During this time, King David was settled in his palace, and he desired to build a permanent temple for the Lord. However, the prophet Nathan, whom David consulted, delivered a message from God regarding the construction of the temple. Nathan initially encouraged David to pursue his plans, but he later received a divine revelation altering his initial response.

David’s Desire to Build the Temple:David’s intention to build a temple for God was rooted in his desire to honor the Lord and provide a central place of worship for the Israelites. His heart was full of gratitude for the Lord’s blessings, as he had witnessed God’s faithfulness throughout his life.

Nathan’s Initial Approval:At first, Nathan responded positively to David’s desire to build the temple, telling him to proceed and follow his heart. Nathan, being a prophet, initially based his response on his own understanding and interpretation of David’s request.

God’s Message through Nathan:However, later that same night, God spoke to Nathan and revealed His divine plan for David. In verses 3‑4 of the same chapter, God instructed Nathan to relay a message to David. God informed Nathan that He had not commanded anyone to build Him a house since the time He brought the Israelites out of Egypt. Instead, God promised to establish a house (a dynasty) for David, implying that one of his descendants would build the temple.

Nathan’s Revised Message:Understanding God’s message, Nathan returned to David to convey the revised revelation from God. The phrase in question, “Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee,” was Nathan’s reassurance to David that God was with him in his desire to honor Him through the temple construction, but that the actual building of the temple would be accomplished by David’s future descendant.

God’s Plans Over Human Desires:This passage demonstrates that sometimes our desires, even if they are well‑intentioned, may not align with God’s plans. It is essential for us to seek God’s guidance and be open to His direction in our lives.

God’s Faithfulness:God affirmed His faithfulness to David by promising him an everlasting dynasty. God’s plans often surpass our expectations, and He remains faithful to His promises.

God’s Presence and Approval:The statement, “for God is with thee,” assures David that God would be with him in his endeavors. This reminder serves as an encouragement for all believers that when we align our hearts with God’s will, He is with us, guiding and empowering us.

The Future Messianic Promise:God’s promise of an everlasting dynasty to David ultimately points to the future Messiah, Jesus Christ. Through David’s lineage, Jesus would come as the true King and establish an eternal kingdom.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 17:2 reveals Nathan’s initial response to David’s desire to build a temple and his subsequent revelation from God. It emphasises the importance of seeking God’s will and understanding His plans, highlighting God’s faithfulness and the assurance of His presence with His people.
