Context:Before diving into a specific verse, it’s important to understand the context. 1 Chronicles is a book that recounts the genealogy and history of Israel from Adam to the time of David. Chapter 17 focuses on King David’s desire to build a house for the Lord, a permanent dwelling place for the Ark of the Covenant.
- Verse:“Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel” (1 Chronicles 17:7, KJV).
- God’s Calling:In this verse, God is speaking through the prophet Nathan to David. The Lord reminds David of his humble origins as a shepherd, highlighting that He, the Lord of hosts, took him from the sheepfold and appointed him as the ruler over His people, Israel. This verse emphasises God’s sovereign choice and calling of David for a special purpose.
- God’s Grace:David’s rise from shepherd to king was not due to his own abilities or qualifications, but because of God’s grace and divine intervention. It illustrates how God often chooses unlikely individuals and raises them up for His purposes. David’s story reminds us that God’s calling is not limited by our human limitations, and He can use anyone who is willing to surrender to His will.
- Humility:The mention of David’s shepherd background serves to humble him and remind him of his dependence on God. Despite his exalted position as king, David is reminded that he is first and foremost a servant of the Lord. This verse highlights the importance of humility and acknowledging God’s role in our lives, regardless of our achievements or positions of authority.
- Faithfulness:David’s journey from shepherd to king was marked by his faithfulness to God. He was devoted to following and obeying the Lord, which led to God’s blessings and favour upon him. This verse serves as a reminder that our faithfulness to God in the ordinary aspects of life can lead to extraordinary opportunities and blessings from Him.
