1 Chronicles 17:19
O Lord, for thy servant’s sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.
1 Chronicles 17:19 (KJV)
Context
King David wanted to build a permanent house for the Lord, a temple for the Ark of the Covenant. God told the prophet Nathan that David would not build it; his son Solomon would. Instead, God promised to establish David’s lineage forever and build a house, meaning a lasting dynasty, for him. Verse 19 is part of David’s prayer of response to this promise.
Meaning
David acknowledges that all God has done is according to His own heart and will, not because of human merit. The phrase “for thy servant’s sake” shows David’s humility; he sees himself as God’s servant. God’s actions are initiated by His own purpose, and He chooses to reveal His plans to David. This emphasizes the intimate relationship between God and His servant.
Biblical connections
The parallel passage in 2 Samuel 7:21 says “for thy word’s sake,” while 1 Chronicles 17:19 says “for thy servant’s sake.” This difference points to Jesus Christ, who is both the Word of God (Revelation 19:13) and the Servant of God (Isaiah 42:1). It is for Christ’s sake, through His mediation, that God’s promises are made good to believers. In Him, all promises are “yea and amen.“
Application
David’s prayer teaches believers to recognize that God’s plans are greater than their own intentions. When God reveals His will, the proper response is humble gratitude, not pride. Believers can trust that God’s promises are secure because they rest on His own heart, not on human effort. Even in trials, they can look for the blessedness of knowing God’s greatness.
Reflection
David marvels that God has made known “all these great things” to him. This revelation is a gift of grace. Like David, believers today can respond with awe and thankfulness, knowing that God’s faithfulness is the foundation of every promise.
