1 Chronicles 22:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“Moreover, there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.”

Context:Before diving into the specific verse, it’s essential to understand the broader context of 1 Chronicles 22. In this chapter, King David prepares for the construction of the temple that his son Solomon would build. David was not allowed to build the temple himself due to his involvement in warfare and shedding blood (1 Chronicles 22:8). Instead, he made extensive preparations and gathered resources for Solomon to carry out the task.

Verse:1 Chronicles 22:15 (KJV) states, “Moreover, there are workmen with thee in abundance, hewers and workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men for every manner of work.”

  • Abundance of workers:This verse highlights the availability of skilled workers in abundance for the construction of the temple. The fact that David had gathered such a significant number of skilled individuals indicates the importance he placed on this project and his commitment to ensuring its success. It also shows the level of his dedication to honouring God and fulfilling God’s desire to have a permanent dwelling place among His people.
  • Skilled artisans:The verse mentions various craftsmen, including hewers, workers of stone and timber, and all manner of cunning men. This emphasises the need for expertise and craftsmanship in building the house of God. God’s dwelling place deserved the best workmanship, demonstrating the honour and reverence the Israelites were to have for their worship and their relationship with God.
  • God-honouring work:This verse reflects David’s understanding that the temple construction was not merely a human endeavour but a divine assignment. The temple was intended to be a place of worship and a symbol of God’s presence among His people. By ensuring the availability of skilled workers, David was actively participating in the fulfilment of God’s plan and showing his reverence for God.

Application:

  • Diligence in God’s work:Like David, we should demonstrate diligence and commitment in carrying out the work that God has assigned to us. Whether it is serving in the church, ministering to others, or fulfilling our specific callings, we should strive for excellence and dedication.
  • Utilising our talents:Just as David gathered skilled artisans, we should recognise and utilise the unique abilities and talents that God has given us. When we use our talents for God’s purposes, we contribute to the building and edification of His kingdom.
  • Recognising God’s presence:The temple in the Old Testament represented God’s presence among His people. As Christians, we understand that we are now the temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19). We should honour God’s presence in our lives by living in a way that glorifies Him, displaying His love, grace, and righteousness to the world.
