2 Chronicles 6:35

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

Then heare thou from the heauens their prayer and their supplication, and maintaine their cause. 2 Chronicles 6:35 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the prayer King Solomon offered at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. Having just completed the building of the house of the Lord, Solomon gathered the people of Israel to consecrate it to God. In his address he acknowledges that the nation will inevitably sin, and he intercedes on their behalf, pleading for forgiveness and restoration.

Solomon also invokes the words of another temple dedication prayer: “Hear, O LORD, the prayer of thy people, and give ear to their supplications.” (1 Kings 8:28, KJV). By recalling this earlier appeal, Solomon underscores the continuity of Israel’s dependence on divine hearing.

Seeking God’s Attention: Solomon recognises that the people will encounter challenges and difficulties in life, and he earnestly asks that God listen to their prayers from heaven and attend to their supplications. This request reflects Solomon’s confidence in God’s ability to hear and respond to the cries of His people.

The Nature of Prayer: The passage highlights prayer as a vital means of communication with God, a channel through which believers present their needs, concerns, and desires. Prayer is portrayed as an act of seeking divine intervention and guidance. Solomon understood its power and encouraged the nation to bring every request before the Lord.

Trusting God’s Justice: Finally, Solomon’s prayer expresses deep trust in God’s righteousness and justice. He asks God to “maintain their cause,” affirming the belief that the Almighty will defend the rights and interests of His people, act as the ultimate judge, and ensure that justice is upheld and the righteous are protected.
