2 Chronicles 6:34

Posted on 18 May at 11:39

If thy people goe out to warre against their enemies by the way that thou shalt send them, and they pray vnto thee toward this citie which thou hast chosen, and the house which I haue built for thy Name: 2 Chronicles 6:34 (KJV)

Context:

To grasp the meaning of this verse it is essential to view it within its broader setting. 2 Chronicles 6 records King Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. In that prayer Solomon acknowledges God’s faithfulness and petitions for the continued presence and blessing of the Lord over the nation. Verse 34 specifically addresses the situation when Israel’s people go out to battle against their enemies.

Seeking God’s Guidance:

Solomon points out that there will be times when the people must engage in war, but he stresses that such occasions require earnest prayer and reliance on divine direction. When the people go out to war they are instructed to pray toward the city that God has chosen—Jerusalem—and toward the house that Solomon built for the Lord’s name. This act of prayer signifies a request for God’s guidance, protection, and favor in the conflict.

The Chosen City:

Jerusalem is identified as the city that the Lord has selected, the place where His presence dwells in the temple. By directing their prayers toward this city, the Israelites symbolically align themselves with God’s covenantal presence and seek His sustaining power for their military endeavors.

Relationship with God:

The verse underscores the necessity of maintaining a close relationship with God in every aspect of life, including times of war. It highlights dependence on God’s wisdom, strength, and guidance. The people are encouraged to turn to the Lord in prayer, acknowledging His sovereignty and seeking His intervention and protection throughout their campaigns.

Application:

Although the passage refers to a specific historical context, the principles it conveys are timeless. In moments of personal challenge, conflict, or decision, believers are called to seek God’s guidance and wisdom, recognize His supreme authority, and pray for His intervention and protection. Such prayers reflect a posture of dependence on the Lord and a desire that His will be accomplished in our lives.
