2 Chronicles 6:33
Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.
2 Chronicles 6:33 (KJV)
Context
This verse is part of Solomon’s prayer at the dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. The immediate context, 2 Chronicles 6:32-33, concerns a foreigner who does not belong to Israel but has come from a distant land because of God’s great name, mighty hand, and outstretched arm. Solomon asks God to hear this stranger when he prays toward the temple.
Meaning
Solomon prays that God would hear from heaven, His dwelling place, and act according to all that the stranger asks. The phrase “called by thy name” means the temple belongs to God, is set apart for His worship, and is a place where His presence and honor dwell. God is not limited to the temple, but He condescends to hear prayers directed toward it.
The purpose of God’s answer is threefold. First, all people of the earth may know God’s name, meaning His character, power, and faithfulness. Second, they may fear Him with reverential awe and obedience, just as Israel does. Third, they may know that this house is called by God’s name. The goal is not just intellectual knowledge but a reverent fear that leads to right worship.
Biblical connections
The parallel passage in 1 Kings 8:43 contains nearly identical wording, confirming the importance of this request for foreigners. This prayer shows that the temple was intended as a house of prayer for all nations, not only Israel. It also anticipates the later inclusion of Gentiles in God’s redemptive purposes.
Application
God is accessible to all people, regardless of nationality or background. Believers are encouraged to have an inclusive heart and to invite others to seek God and experience His grace. When we pray, even when we feel like strangers in a foreign land, God hears and responds according to His wisdom and purposes.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God’s fame spreads through answered prayer. As we pray for others, we participate in making God’s name known and in drawing all peoples to reverent worship. The temple pointed to a greater reality: God dwells with His people and welcomes all who call on Him in sincerity.
