2 Chronicles 9:8

Blessed be the Lord thy God, which delighted in thee to set thee on his throne, to be king for the Lord thy God: because thy God loved Israel, to establish them for ever, therefore made he thee king over them, to do judgment and justice.

2 Chronicles 9:8 (KJV)

The Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon after hearing of his wisdom. She came with hard questions and many gifts. After seeing his palace, his officials, and his offerings, she praised Solomon and blessed his God. Her words in this verse are part of her response to all she observed.

The queen begins by blessing the Lord, not Solomon himself. She recognizes that God delighted in Solomon and set him on the throne. The phrase “his throne” shows that all authority belongs to God. Solomon ruled as a steward under God’s ultimate kingship. The queen also declares that God loved Israel and wanted to establish them forever. Therefore, He made Solomon king to do judgment and justice. This means ruling with fairness, righteousness, and obedience to God’s law. Her words affirm that true leadership is a divine appointment, rooted in God’s love for His people and intended for righteous governance.

God’s love for Israel and His promise to establish them forever echo His covenant with David. In 2 Samuel 7:16, God promised David that his throne would be established forever. Solomon’s kingship was a step toward that enduring promise. The queen’s praise shows that even an outsider could see God’s hand in Israel’s leadership. Her words remind us that God’s blessings on a leader serve the whole community, not just the leader’s own honor. This passage also reflects the biblical principle that human kingship is a stewardship under God’s authority, as Solomon sits on “His throne” and rules “for the Lord.“

This verse teaches that all authority comes from God. Whether in a family, a workplace, or a nation, leaders are appointed by God for a purpose. That purpose includes justice and care for others. We should acknowledge God’s favour in our own positions and use them to serve people rightly. The queen’s example also encourages us to recognize and praise God’s work in others, even when we are not part of their community. God’s blessings upon a leader are not for personal glory but for the welfare of the people and the fulfillment of His covenant purposes.

God’s love for His people is the reason He raises up leaders. He is faithful to His promises and works through human rulers to accomplish His plans. As we see God’s care for Israel, we can trust His care for us today. We are called to pray for those in authority and to support leaders who pursue justice. Most of all, we are reminded to bless the Lord for His goodness and to live with gratitude for His faithful love.
