2 Chronicles 13:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:36

“And the rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings, are written in the story of the prophet Iddo.”

Historical Context: 2 Chronicles 13 is a chapter that recounts the reign of Abijah (also known as Abijam), the son of Rehoboam and grandson of Solomon. Abijah was the third king of the Kingdom of Judah, and his reign lasted for three years (913-910 BC). He ruled during a time of conflict and war between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.

  • Abijah’s Military Victory:

The chapter begins by describing the battle between Abijah’s army of 400,000 valiant warriors from Judah, and Jeroboam’s army of 800,000 mighty men from Israel. Despite being greatly outnumbered, Abijah trusted in the Lord and delivered a powerful speech, emphasising Judah’s rightful claim to the Davidic covenant and rebuking the idolatry of the northern kingdom of Israel. The Lord granted Abijah a resounding victory over Israel, resulting in the loss of 500,000 of Jeroboam’s men.

The Importance of Recording Abijah’s Acts: After mentioning Abijah’s victory and the capture of several cities, verse 22 briefly acknowledges that the “rest of the acts of Abijah, and his ways, and his sayings” are recorded in the story of the prophet Iddo. This verse indicates that there were additional historical records and accounts of Abijah’s life, actions, and teachings.

The Role of the Prophet Iddo: Iddo was a prophet who lived during the time of Abijah and wrote about his reign. Unfortunately, not much is known about Iddo outside of the biblical references to him in 2 Chronicles. He is also mentioned in other parts of Scripture, such as 2 Chronicles 9:29 and 2 Chronicles 12:15, where he recorded the acts of King Solomon and King Rehoboam.

Importance of Recording History: The inclusion of this verse highlights the importance of historical documentation and the role of prophets in recording the acts and sayings of God’s chosen leaders. Throughout the Bible, we see the value placed on remembering and preserving historical events as a testimony to God’s faithfulness and the lessons learned from the lives of His people.
