2 Chronicles 17:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Iudah, and set garisons in the land of Iudah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken. 2 Chronicles 17:2 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 17 is a chapter that focuses on the reign of Jehoshaphat, the son of King Asa and the fourth king of Judah. Jehoshaphat is presented as a righteous king who sought the Lord and implemented reforms in the nation.

In 2 Chronicles 17:2 we see that Jehoshaphat took decisive measures to strengthen the military forces in the land of Judah. He placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim. These actions were strategically placed to protect the kingdom from external threats and to maintain peace within the land.

The verse also notes that the garrisons were set in the cities of Ephraim, which had been taken by his father Asa. This shows that Jehoshaphat continued the military achievements of his father, building upon the foundation laid by Asa and highlighting the importance of the father’s influence and the continuation of a godly legacy.

Spiritual lessons emerge from Jehoshaphat’s preparedness. His actions demonstrate the importance of being prepared and taking necessary measures for protection and security. Likewise, Christians are called to be spiritually prepared by equipping themselves with the knowledge of God’s Word and putting on the armor of God to stand against spiritual attacks (Ephesians 6:10‑18).

The continuity in faith is another key point. Jehoshaphat’s continuation of his father’s military achievements serves as a reminder of the significance of passing down godly values and faith from one generation to the next. It emphasizes the role of parents and spiritual leaders in nurturing and guiding the next generation in their relationship with God.

While military defense was crucial, Jehoshaphat’s ultimate trust and reliance were placed in the Lord. Later in the chapter it is recorded that the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he sought the God of his father and walked in His commandments. Believers are therefore called to put their trust in God, seek Him diligently, and follow His commandments in all aspects of life.

In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 17:2 highlights King Jehoshaphat’s efforts to strengthen Judah’s defenses. The verse teaches the importance of preparedness, continuity in faith, and trusting in God as we navigate the challenges and responsibilities of our lives.
