2 Chronicles 17:2

And he placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah, and in the cities of Ephraim, which Asa his father had taken.

2 Chronicles 17:2 (KJV)

Jehoshaphat became king of Judah after his father Asa. This verse records his early actions to secure the kingdom. He placed forces in all the fenced cities of Judah, meaning cities with walls and defenses. He also set garrisons, or stationed soldiers, in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim that Asa had captured. These were strategic moves to protect the nation from outside attacks and to keep peace within its borders.

The phrase “fenced cities” points to fortified places that could withstand an enemy siege. By placing forces there, Jehoshaphat made sure these strongholds were ready for defense. Garrisons on frontiers and borders served as a first line of protection. The mention of Ephraim’s cities connects to Asa’s earlier victory, recorded in 2 Chronicles 15:8, when he took cities from the northern kingdom. Jehoshaphat did not abandon his father’s gains; he built on them and strengthened the kingdom’s security.

This verse shows continuity in faith and leadership. Jehoshaphat continued the work his father began, which reminds us of the importance of passing down godly values from one generation to the next. The later part of this chapter says the Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he sought the God of his father and walked in His commandments. So his military preparation was not separate from his devotion to God; both were part of serving the Lord faithfully.

Jehoshaphat’s preparedness teaches believers to be spiritually ready. Just as he fortified cities and set guards, Christians are called to equip themselves with God’s Word and to stand firm against spiritual attacks, as Ephesians 6:10-18 describes the armor God provides. This does not mean trusting in human strength alone. It means taking responsible action while placing ultimate trust in the Lord. Parents and spiritual leaders also have a duty to nurture the next generation in faith, so that godly heritage continues.

Jehoshaphat’s example challenges us to examine our own lives. Are we building on the faithful foundation others have laid? Are we taking practical steps to protect what God has given us, while relying on Him rather than on our own efforts? His reign shows that wise preparation and wholehearted trust in God belong together. As we face daily responsibilities, we can follow his pattern: act with care, seek the Lord, and walk in His commandments.
