Context

This verse appears in the military census of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. Meaning

Jehohanan was a captain, or commander, leading 280,000 troops. He served “next to” Adnah, the chief commander, showing a clear hierarchy. The large number of soldiers under Jehohanan indicates careful preparation and organization. This verse does not focus on Jehohanan’s personal faith, but on his role in defending the kingdom. His listing among the commanders shows that every position mattered in the nation’s defense.

Biblical connections

Earlier in the chapter, verse 10 says that the terror of the Lord fell on the surrounding kingdoms, so they did not make war against Jehoshaphat. This shows that God’s favor was the true source of peace, even though the army was large. The military strength described here is presented as a consequence of Jehoshaphat’s faithfulness. Later, in 2 Chronicles 20, when a great enemy alliance came, Jehoshaphat cried out to God and acknowledged his own weakness. Like Jehohanan, we can serve faithfully in our assigned roles, whether large or small, while depending on God for the outcome. Order and readiness are good, but they never replace humble prayer.
