2 Chronicles 17:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents, and tribute silver; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand and seven hundred rams, and seven thousand and seven hundred he goats.”

Historical Context:King Jehoshaphat was the fourth king of Judah, and he reigned from approximately 872 to 849 BC. He followed in the footsteps of his father, King Asa, by seeking to honor God and promote religious reforms among the people. Jehoshaphat prioritised the worship of Yahweh and instituted changes to eliminate idolatry in Judah.

Alliances and Blessings:In the verse, we see that Jehoshaphat received presents and tribute from the Philistines and flocks from the Arabians. These offerings were likely a result of the alliances Jehoshaphat had formed with neighbouring nations. Through wise diplomacy and military alliances, he sought to strengthen his kingdom and protect it from potential threats.

  • Trusting God:Jehoshaphat’s alliances demonstrate the importance of seeking God’s guidance when making decisions. While forming alliances can be beneficial, it is crucial to rely on God’s wisdom and discernment to ensure we align ourselves with His will.
  • God’s Provision:The verse highlights God’s faithfulness in providing for His people. The presents and tribute silver from the Philistines and the flocks from the Arabians were tangible blessings that came as a result of Jehoshaphat’s faithfulness to God and his desire to honour Him.
  • The Impact of Influence:Jehoshaphat’s commitment to serving God and promoting righteousness influenced the surrounding nations. As a result, they recognised his authority and brought him gifts. This illustrates the potential impact of our own lives when we live out our faith and strive to honour God in all that we do.
  • Balancing Alliances:While alliances can be beneficial, we should be cautious in forming partnerships that compromise our faith or lead us away from God’s will. Jehoshaphat’s alliances were strategic, but he maintained his focus on serving God, and that should be our guiding principle as well.
