2 Chronicles 17:12

And Jehoshaphat waxed great exceedingly; and he built in Judah castles, and cities of store.

2 Chronicles 17:12 (KJV)

2 Chronicles 17 describes the reign of Jehoshaphat, a righteous king of Judah who followed the Lord and promoted spiritual reform. This verse records his prosperity and his building projects in Judah.

The phrase “waxed great exceedingly” means Jehoshaphat became very powerful and prosperous. His greatness included wealth, military strength, and successful leadership. He used a time of peace to strengthen his kingdom.

Castles were fortified buildings for defense. By building them, Jehoshaphat protected his people from enemy attacks. Cities of store were places where supplies such as food, wine, and weapons were kept. These cities helped the nation prepare for future needs or crises. This building activity was part of his strategic strengthening of the kingdom, using divine favor to fortify and prepare.

Jehoshaphat’s building work continued in the next verse, where he had much business in the cities of Judah and mighty men of valor in Jerusalem (2 Chronicles 17:13). This shows his careful administration and military readiness. His prosperity came from his devotion to God, as the chapter earlier records his obedience to the Lord. The broader context shows he promoted the study and observance of God’s law, and his greatness was a result of that devotion.

Jehoshaphat’s example teaches that godly leadership combines spiritual faithfulness with practical care. He did not neglect the physical needs of his people while seeking their spiritual good. Believers today can wisely prepare for the future, using resources to protect and provide for others. This passage illustrates that godly leadership involves both spiritual faithfulness and practical stewardship, using resources wisely for the security and well-being of the people.

True greatness in God’s eyes includes faithful service and responsible stewardship. Jehoshaphat’s buildings were not for pride but for the welfare of the nation. His life encourages us to use our abilities and resources to serve God and bless others. His example reminds us that preparation and provision are acts of faithful service.
