2 Chronicles 18:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:37

“And Ahab king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, Wilt thou go with me to Ramoth-gilead? And he answered him, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.”

Context:To understand the significance of this verse, it’s important to consider the context of the passage. This verse is part of a larger narrative in 2 Chronicles 18, which recounts the alliance between King Ahab of Israel and King Jehoshaphat of Judah. Ahab sought Jehoshaphat’s support in a military campaign against Ramoth-gilead.

Jehoshaphat’s Response:In response to Ahab’s request, Jehoshaphat agreed to go to war alongside Ahab, stating, “I am as thou art, and my people as thy people; and we will be with thee in the war.” This statement reveals Jehoshaphat’s willingness to align himself and his people with Ahab and the nation of Israel.

Consideration of Jehoshaphat’s Decision:Jehoshaphat’s decision to join forces with Ahab raises several important points for reflection:

  • Unity and Alliance: Jehoshaphat’s response emphasizes the unity and alliance between the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Despite the historical tensions between these two kingdoms, Jehoshaphat recognized the importance of standing together against a common enemy.
  • Spiritual Discernment: It is essential to exercise spiritual discernment in making alliances or partnerships. In this case, Jehoshaphat’s decision to join Ahab in battle had significant spiritual implications because Ahab was an ungodly king who led Israel into idolatry. Jehoshaphat’s alignment with Ahab had negative consequences, as we see later in the chapter.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance: Jehoshaphat’s initial decision to support Ahab was made without seeking God’s guidance. Later in the passage, Jehoshaphat acknowledges the need to inquire of the Lord (2 Chronicles 18:4) before engaging in battle.

Application:As we consider 2 Chronicles 18:3 in our lives, a few key lessons emerge:

  • Discernment and Wisdom:We should exercise discernment and seek godly wisdom when forming partnerships or alliances. It is important to evaluate the spiritual implications and potential consequences of our associations.
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:Before making important decisions, we must seek God’s guidance through prayer, study of His Word, and seeking counsel from mature believers. God’s wisdom can guide us in making the right choices and avoiding potential pitfalls.
  • Unity and Harmony:When facing common challenges or enemies, it is crucial for believers to stand together in unity. However, unity should not compromise our commitment to God’s truth and righteousness.
