2 Chronicles 18:5
“Therefore the king of Israel gathered together of prophets four hundred men, and said unto them, Shall we go to Ramoth-gilead to battle, or shall I forbear? And they said, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king’s hand.”
In this verse, we find King Ahab of Israel seeking advice from a group of prophets regarding whether he should go to battle against Ramoth-gilead.
The context of this verse is important to understand the significance of the events that unfold.
Historical context:King Ahab was the king of the northern kingdom of Israel, known for his wickedness and idolatry. He was married to Jezebel, a pagan queen who led him and the nation into the worship of false gods.
The question posed:Ahab gathers four hundred prophets and asks them whether he should go to battle against Ramoth-gilead or refrain from it.
The purpose of seeking their advice was to determine the outcome of the battle and to discern the will of God.
The response of the prophets:The prophets unanimously encourage Ahab to go up to battle, assuring him that God will deliver Ramoth-gilead into his hands. It is important to note that these prophets were not true prophets of God but rather prophets who prophesied falsely, as is later revealed in the chapter.
The influence of false prophets:The response of these four hundred prophets was influenced by their desire to please Ahab and tell him what he wanted to hear. They spoke falsely, disregarding the true counsel of God. Their false prophecy ultimately leads Ahab to his downfall.
The importance of discernment:This passage highlights the significance of discerning the truth and seeking counsel from genuine prophets of God. Ahab’s reliance on false prophets instead of seeking the word of the Lord through a true prophet contributed to his defeat and eventual death.
Application for believers:As believers, we are reminded to exercise discernment when seeking counsel or guidance. It is crucial to align ourselves with the truth of God’s Word and seek wise counsel from individuals who are grounded in biblical principles. We should be cautious of false teachings and deceptive voices that may lead us astray.
In conclusion, 2 Chronicles 18:5 serves as a warning against relying on false prophets and highlights the importance of discernment in seeking godly counsel. It encourages believers to seek the truth of God’s Word and rely on genuine prophetic guidance aligned with His will.
