2 Chronicles 23:18

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Also Iehoiada appointed the offices of the house of the Lord by the hand of the Priests the Leuites, whom Dauid had distributed in the house of the Lord, to offer the burnt offrings of the Lord, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with reioycing and with singing, as it was ordeined by Dauid. 2 Chronicles 23:18 (KJV)

2 Chronicles is a historical book in the Old Testament that focuses on the kings of Judah, the southern kingdom, after the division of Israel. In this particular chapter we find the account of the righteous high priest Jehoiada and the restoration of the Davidic line to the throne. The verse records several important details.

Jehoiada’s appointment: Jehoiada, the high priest during the reign of Joash, appointed the offices of the house of the LORD. He was a godly figure who played a significant role in the religious reforms of that time, and as a faithful servant he took responsibility to ensure that the Levitical priests were properly organized and functioning in their roles.

Offices of the house of the LORD: The “offices” refer to the various tasks and responsibilities within the temple, including the maintenance of the sanctuary, the offering of sacrifices, and other priestly duties. Jehoiada oversaw the appointment and distribution of these positions.

Priests and Levites: The priests and Levites were distinct groups within the Israelite religious system. The priests, from the tribe of Levi, performed the rituals and sacrifices in the temple, while the Levites assisted the priests and carried out other important tasks related to worship and the upkeep of the sanctuary.

David’s distribution: The verse notes that Jehoiada appointed the priests and Levites as David had distributed them in the house of the LORD. This refers to an earlier organizational structure that King David established (see 1 Chronicles 24‑26), ensuring that the Levites were divided into various divisions to serve on a rotational basis.

Burnt offerings and the Law of Moses: The appointed priests and Levites were responsible for offering the burnt offerings of the LORD according to the Law of Moses. In the Mosaic Law the burnt offering was a significant sacrifice representing the complete dedication and surrender of the worshiper to God, offered as a symbol of worship and atonement for sin.

Rejoicing and singing: The verse highlights that the burnt offerings were offered with rejoicing and singing, as ordained by David. This points to the spirit of joy and gratitude that characterized temple worship in David’s time, with the people recognizing God’s faithfulness and expressing their praise through music and song.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 23:18 underscores the importance of proper organization and worship in the house of the LORD. It reminds us of the significance of maintaining the practices and principles established by faithful leaders like David and of obedience to the Law of Moses. The mention of rejoicing and singing further emphasizes the joyful nature of true worship, where heartfelt praise and thanksgiving are offered to God.
