2 Chronicles 26:22

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Now the rest of the actes of Uzziah first and last, did Isaiah the prophet the sonne of Amoz write. 2 Chronicles 26:22 (KJV)

Before diving into the specific verse, it is essential to understand the context in which it is found. Uzziah, also known as Azariah, was a king of Judah who ascended the throne at the age of sixteen and reigned for fifty‑two years. He began his reign as a righteous king who sought the Lord, and God blessed him with military victories, prosperity, and a period of peace. As his power grew, however, pride entered his heart. He attempted to offer incense in the temple—an act reserved for the priests—and, as a result, God struck him with leprosy. From that time he lived in isolation until his death.

The verse notes that Isaiah, the son of Amoz, wrote the rest of the acts of Uzziah, first and last. While the canonical Book of Isaiah does not contain this historical account, the statement indicates that Isaiah, the renowned prophet, also functioned as a chronicler of Uzziah’s reign. The lost document would have recorded the king’s achievements, victories, and the overall course of his rule.

The mention of Isaiah’s documentation highlights the importance of historical records in biblical times. Throughout Scripture, the deeds of kings, prophets, and other significant figures are recorded to preserve accounts of God’s interaction with His people, the consequences of obedience or disobedience, and the fulfillment of prophecy. Chronicles and Kings are the primary sources for such histories, and the attribution to Isaiah underscores the trust placed in reliable records and the authority of prophetic writings.

Uzziah’s life serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of pride and arrogance. His early humility and devotion brought blessing, but his later self‑reliance and disregard for God’s commands led to his downfall. The narrative reminds believers of the importance of humility, obedience, and acknowledging God’s authority in every aspect of life.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 26:22 provides a glimpse into a historical record of Uzziah’s reign, highlights Isaiah’s role as a chronicler, and calls us to learn from Uzziah’s mistakes by cultivating humility and obedience before God.
