2 Chronicles 31:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:38

Moreouer, he commaunded the people that dwelt in Ierusalem, to giue the portion of the Priests, and the Leuites, that they might be incouraged in the Law of the Lord. 2 Chronicles 31:4 (KJV)

This verse highlights King Hezekiah’s command to the people of Jerusalem to provide the portion due to the priests and Levites. During Hezekiah’s reign Judah experienced a revival and a return to the worship of God. Hezekiah took decisive actions to restore proper worship practices, cleansing the temple, removing idols, and reinstating the offerings and sacrifices prescribed by God’s law.

Hezekiah commanded the people to give a portion—tithes, first‑fruits, and other offerings to the priests and Levites. These contributions were intended to support the religious leaders and those serving in the temple, enabling them to devote themselves fully to their sacred duties and to the teaching of the law.

And they gave willingly, and the contribution of the people also came as a gift.

Providing for the priests and Levites encouraged them in the law of the LORD and helped maintain the temple’s functions and the instruction of God’s law among the people. Their support recognized the importance of their role in guiding the nation and fostering a deep understanding of Scripture.

First, it underscores stewardship: honoring God’s commands regarding tithes and offerings and recognizing our responsibility to support those who serve in ministry. Second, it highlights the value of encouraging those who study and teach Scripture, reminding us to uplift and assist those who labor in the teaching of God’s word. Third, it points to the priority of worship; Hezekiah’s reforms centered on restoring proper worship practices, and by ensuring the support of the priests and Levites, he created an environment conducive to the study and practice of God’s law.

Overall, 2 Chronicles 31:4 reminds us of the importance of stewardship, of supporting and encouraging those who teach God’s law, and of prioritising worship. Our provision for those dedicated to God’s service is a vital component in fostering a thriving, vibrant spiritual community.
